Meetings Highlight Data From Studies Using Microwave Ablation in Lung, Kidney and Liver
Results From Prospective Clinical Studies of Vivant Medical's Proprietary VivaWave(TM) Microwave Ablation System to be Presented at Surgical and Interventional Society Meetings
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Vivant Medical, Inc. announced today that five scientific abstracts from prospective clinical studies using the VivaWave(TM) Microwave Ablation System have been accepted for presentation in 2005 and will be presented by their respective clinical investigators. These abstracts, which build upon 2004 presentations, provide results in lung, kidney and liver ablations.
Two abstracts will be presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology, March 31-April 5 in New Orleans; and one abstract will be presented at the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, April 14-17 in Fort Lauderdale; and the American Urological Society, May 21-26 in San Antonio. An abstract was already presented at the Society of Gastro Intestinal Radiology earlier this month in San Antonio.
Image-guided ablative therapies have received significant attention in recent years as a minimally invasive approach for treating localized diseased tissue, particularly for patients who are poor surgical candidates. Microwave ablation offers cost benefits versus other ablative technologies because of broader patient selection criteria and decreased procedure time.
Vivant's VivaWave system is a proprietary ablation system that utilizes microwave heating to kill target cells. VivaWave has been used in over 275 procedures performed by interventional radiologists and surgeons. Results show that microwave ablation creates large ablation zones (5-6 cm) quickly (5- 10 minutes) through the use of multiple concurrent applicators, allowing more patients to be treated cost effectively. In addition, no grounding pads are needed and anesthesia time is reduced.
