Westwood-based company makes the first online "Lord of the Rings" game
September 3, 2003 - Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien will soon be able to explore his fictional "Middle-Earth," play with thousands of friends worldwide and embark on exciting adventures as elves, humans, hobbits or dwarves.
The Lord of the Rings: Middle-Earth Online is the first Tolkein computer game to be available as massively multiplayer online game, enabling thousands of players to play simultaneously.
Developed by Westwood's Turbine Entertainment Software, in partnership with Vivendi Universal Games, the software will sit on a central server, and players will pay a monthly subscription fee to play the game and have regular access to updated content. Middle-Earth Online will be available by end of next year.
