High Stakes Games
By Rodney Brown Mass High Tech
If your company was struggling for dominance in its field against three others, what would it take to win the struggle?
In the case of one Westwood company the struggle may be over after signing deals with the two biggest brand names among its users.
Turbine Entertainment Software, maker of the massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) Asheron’s Call and Asheron’s Call 2, has signed separate deals to produce online games for J.R.R. Tolkien’s world of the Lord of the Rings and for Dungeons & Dragons.
Landing either of these two would have been a coup for any of the other three top online gaming companies — Origin Systems, maker of Ultima Online, Verant, maker of Everquest, and NCsoft, maker of Lineage — but the combination attack of the two new deals for Turbine may be its knockout punch.
